Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic death in a car accident, on Saturday 29 th June 2024, of Prof Roman Zaviyskyy. Roman, president of the Ukrainian branch of the European Society of Catholic Theology, was born and grew up in Lviv. We remember his active presence and his wonderful smile from many meetings. Roman has both a master’s degree and a licentiate from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. In July 2011 Roman became the first Ukrainian citizen to defend a doctorate in theology at Oxford University, his doctorate was entitled “Shaping modern Russian Orthodox Trinitarian theology: a critical study of Sergii Bulgakov with reference to Vladimir Lossky and Georgii Florovsky”. Roman lectured for some years at Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU). More recently his life and his theology, influenced by personal experience, has focused on the role of military chaplains in Ukraine, alongside questions of Catholic responses to war.
At this heartbreaking time we keep his wife Halyna, and their two sons Danylo and Mykola, in our prayers. All three are currently living in Ireland where Halyna holds a position lecturing in Religious Education.
May Roman rest in peace.
